Walker's Home!

I got a wonderful phone call from the vet tech taking care of Walker this morning.  He said the doctor cleared Walker to go home today!

Considering the nature of our trip, I thought it was very appropriate to take a picture of this:
My father takes a lot of medicines for various ailments.  Once when he was in the hospital, I had to go to my parents' house and gather all of his medications for the doctor's review.  I brought the doctor a Kroger bag brimming with pill bottles.

The quantity of Walker's medications is second only to my Dad's.
These are his anti-biotic and anti-nausea drugs.  Fortunately, these are short term medications. We hope.  :)

Aside from being very skinny and an abrasion on his nose (I don't know how that happened), our Walker is back!

I realize his body has been through the wringer and he needs a lot of R & R in order to achieve a clean bill of health.  However, he hasn't had his daily dose of 60 mg. of Prozac (for idiopathic fear/spookiness) in nine days.  His behavior is exactly like it was before he got sick, if not improved.  We'll talk to the vet in about a week about the necessity of continuing it.  Maybe he doesn't need it anymore?

He loves his downstairs pillow.
A trip outside.
There's our alert boy.  We hadn't seen this wide-eyed face in a while.
We still don't know what caused Walker's illness.  The vet doesn't think he consumed poison or anything toxic.  There was no obstruction.  Whatever it is/was didn't harm Truly or Maggie.  It's troublesome to think that we may never know the cause - mainly because we can't prevent whatever it was from happening again.

When Walker got sick, we took him to the vet we have used for years. His condition worsened.  With the help and support of our SEGA friends, we are fortunate to be able to get Walker in the hands of vet who cared about him and who had the experience to help him.

That's one of the many benefits of the greyhound community - people who reach out to offer suggestions, insight and support.  Tonight we are celebrating Walker's homecoming and our friends who helped make his homecoming possible.

  2. I came across this about Prozac: Side Effects of Prozac For Dogs

As with any other medication, there is a chance your pet will experience mild to severe side effects while taking Prozac for dogs. This drug is known to alter blood glucose levels and should be carefully considered for dogs with diabetes mellitus. The drug has also shown to produce aggression and/or biting in rare cases. This includes enhancing the side effect in dogs already experiencing the problem, or creating aggression in dogs that were previously non-aggressive. Other side effects to consider are the following:
    •Lethargy or over-calmness
    •Gastrointestinal disturbances
    •Anxiety
    •Irritability or aggression
    •Sleeplessness
    •Hyperactivity
    •Excessive panting
    •Loss of appetite

I'd leave off the Prozac and see if Walker is ok.

    So glad he's home.

  3. Sue,
We always worried about giving him that Prozac. I'm glad he's off of it right now and doing really well. I don't see any difference in his spooky behavior on it or off of it. Thanks for this info. We'll follow up with the vet for sure.

  4. I'm so glad he's home. He looks very happy to be home. I would definitely talk to the vet about keeping him off Prozac since he doesn't seem to need it any longer. If something changes later, you can always see about putting him back on it, if you have to.

I am just thrilled he's doing beter and is home. Sounds like it was some kind of virus, but weird that he would have gotten it.

  5. So glad that Walker is home. Prayers and crossed paws that this was a one-time thing. Please keep telling us how he progresses. I agree...having the Greyhound community is wonderful in so many ways.

  6. We are SO glad that Walker is home and on the mend. He looks a little dangerous with that nose abrasion. A hound of mystery. He also looks pretty darned glad to be home!

  7. I'm SO glad to see him at home again! He looks so happy! My guess is that he was trying to chew on his crate to get that nose mark. We had a few of them and that's a common sign of it. Have fun spoiling him! :) He deserves it after all he's been through!

  10. Yay!!! Hope he's back to couch weight in no time. When we gave our kitty Prozac, we only did it for a while. The vet said it 'reset' her and didn't need to be taken forever. Our vet is 45 min away, and we pass dozens of vets on the way, but all the vets there are so greyhound-savvy that we think it's worth it.
